Use lowercase for hiragana and uppercase for katakana: "watashihaGARII*BENSONdesu" converts to 「わたしはガリー・ベンソンです」.

Use apostrophes or hyphens to separate ambiguous 'n's; to get 「てんいん」 you must enter "ten'in" or "ten-in". This is not necessary for unambiguous ones: "konnichiha" and "kon'nichiha" both end up as 「こんにちは」.
